Phil McCallion leads a panel discussion aimed at Ukraine health officials

Temple co-hosts Philadelphia study tour for Ukraine health officials

Fourteen senior health officials from Ukraine visited Philadelphia from June 11 to 17, gathering strategies for addressing a quietly emerging crisis amid Russia’s devastating attacks: their country’s rising need for mental healthcare. Over five days, leaders of Ukrainian national and regional agencies visited facilities across the city and heard presentations from public health officials, providers and experts.  “The current mental health system in Ukraine is not adequate to really address the challenges that will be occurring in the next years,” said William Aaronson,...

Lucy Wachira teaching in a classroom

'African Perspectives' class places physical activity and public health in cultural context

Only a very small portion of Lucy Wachira’s kinesiology class on nutrition trends is about alternative proteins. But the subject of edible insects as a valuable food source, and a delicacy in some communities, perks up the undergrad students one afternoon in her “African Perspectives on Physical Activity, Nutrition and Health” class, especially when she shows them a photo from an African food market of trays filled with pre-cooked edible insects for sale. Some students ask for more details. Some squirm a little. “Let me move on from this picture, because I still want yo...

Julia Stengel helps reduce health disparities through Public Health Beyond Borders

In October of 2022, Julia Stengel arrived in the small town of Enriquillo on the southwestern coast of the Dominican Republic. After a long day’s travel that included two flights and a 6-hour bus ride through the Dominican countryside, she retired to a local hotel for some well-deserved rest. The next three days would be busy ones. Stengel, a junior bachelor of science in public health student, traveled to the Dominican Republic as a member of Public Health Beyond Borders (PHBB), a student-led organization dedicated to promoting healthy behaviors and reducing health dispariti...

Through faculty fellowship in Israel, McLoughlin shares implementation science expertise

Gabriella McLoughlin, assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology, brought her expertise to Israel this summer as part of the Jewish National Fund-USA’s Faculty Fellowship Program. The two-week program allowed selected U.S. professors to share expertise with colleagues in Israel and foster collaborative opportunities through meetings at institutions across the country. U.S. faculty members visited Tel Aviv, Haifa, Jerusalem, the Golan Heights, the West Bank, and other areas, meeting researchers and practitioners at institutions such as Ben Gurion University, Tel Aviv...

Collaborations connect Kinesiology students with researchers in Nigeria and South Africa

At a time when student opportunities to study abroad are curtailed by pandemic travel restrictions, the College of Public Health’s Department of Kinesiology has formed partnerships with institutions in Africa to collaborate virtually on public health research projects. “Physical activity and nutrition are important around the world—and different around the world,” says Mark Stoutenberg, chair of the department. “The more we can expose our students to the issues that people face in different populations, the better equipped they’ll be to put it into practice, wherev...

Sarah Monshi

After studying tobacco control, Monshi returns home to teach health policy in Saudi Arabia

Sarah Monshi is heading home to teach public health policy at Umm Al-Qura University in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, after earning her doctorate this year at Temple’s College of Public Health.  Umm Al-Qura’s relatively new College of Public Health has a program sending instructors abroad for graduate-level education so that they can later return as faculty members. Born and raised in Saudi Arabia, Monshi earned her undergraduate degree in laboratory medicine at Umm Al-Qura, where she later worked as a teaching assistant. She studied at Hofstra University to earn her master’s d...

In upcoming book, Zibalese-Crawford shares insights from around the globe

Marsha Zibalese-Crawford is an associate professor of social work in the College of Public Health, but the stamps in her passport and her frequent-flyer mileage might make her seem more like a global diplomat. Her work to strengthen human services agencies has taken her from Philadelphia to places as varied as the Israeli desert and the streets of Hong Kong. Her research has taken her to Poland, the Czech Republic and Bosnia-Herzegovina, with Japan and India on the docket later this year. Now she is putting her decades of globetrotting into a forthcoming book for Temple’s Nort...

DNP student returns to Sierra Leone to evaluate state of healthcare

When Sheku Sillah started his nursing career, he always hoped to one day return to his home country of Sierra Leone, which—when he left the country at the age of 10—had an average life expectancy around 35. As a doctor of nursing practice student, Sillah fulfilled that dream, traveling to Freetown, Sierra Leone, on a trip to deliver medical supplies and evaluate the state of healthcare in the West African country. Since then, he has returned on multiple occasions alongside other Temple students. What first brought you to Philadelphia? I was born in Sierra Leone. My father w...

Finding success in a dental care program for Armenian elementary schools

Before Hamlet Gasoyan joined the College of Public Health as a doctoral student, he was a practicing dentist. Though his doctoral research focuses on insurance benefit design and the benefits of bariatric surgery, he hasn’t left dental health behind. Gasoyan recently documented the benefits of a program that delivers dental care to rural villages of his native Armenia. His analysis determined that the program, which helps elementary school children develop the habit of brushing their teeth regularly, reduced the prevalence of cavities by 30 percent, making a significant impac...
