Alumna keeps social work roots while growing women's health resources

Liz Bland, SSW '05, has built a career combining her expertise in health policy and administration with ground-level clinical social work. Even as she was building a new behavioral health division of the Philadelphia-area Main Line Health system in 2013—creating what would become the first of two outpatient mental health centers for women—she worked hands-on as a psychotherapist, seeing patients as part of that program. “That's the beauty of the social work degree. You have the ability to play different roles in organizations,” says Bland, who received her Master of S...

Alumna receives national honor as community health coordinator

Temple public health graduate Kaitlin Cartoccio, CPH '12, has been recognized as one of “40 Under 40 in Public Health,” a national honor highlighting leaders who are improving the health of communities across the country. Cartoccio is making an impact at the local level as community programs coordinator for Bernards Township, New Jersey. She manages programs including health education events at schools, neighborhood health screenings and vaccination clinics, working as a leader in the health department where she interned while studying at Temple.  “I really feel like Tem...

DEI Speaker Series panel discusses actions to address structural racism

On October 26, 2020, Philadelphia police fatally shot Walter Wallace Jr., a 27-year-old Black man, after his family had called for an ambulance because he was having a mental health crisis. Wallace, who had a history of such episodes, held a knife. The killing set off angry protests in the city. It also spurred conversations about the intersection between structural racism in policing and the often inadequate way that cities handle emergency response to mental health situations.  In January, a panel of Temple faculty and guest experts discussed these issues in a video webinar...

Two alumni show how public health can help pharmaceuticals

Matt Phillips spends a lot of time researching infectious diseases and the impact that vaccines can have on patient outcomes. “Who is getting sick? How long are they out of work when they get sick? How much does it cost to care for them?,” asks Phillips, who earned his undergraduate and masters degrees in public health at Temple. He sets up studies to investigate. “It’s finding the value of a vaccine that we could introduce into society to help these patients.”   ...

Alumna Patten recognized with AOTA's highest honor

Kristie Patten, a two-time Temple alumna who earned her master’s degree in occupational therapy and a PhD in educational psychology from Temple, has been recognized with the highest academic honor in her profession. The American Occupational Therapy Association has named Patten recipient of the 2021 Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lectureship Award, which honors an individual who has “creatively contributed to the development of the body of knowledge of the profession through research, education, and/or clinical practice.” Patten is currently vice dean for academic affairs at New...

Doctoral research on sickle cell in Saudi Arabia earns national recognition

Mohammed Alhajji’s doctoral research has won him two national awards, returned him to his native Saudi Arabia to continue his work, and led him to become, he thinks, “the first PhD student ever to defend their dissertation in a hallway in an empty building.” Alhajji, who graduated in spring 2020 with a PhD in Social and Behavioral Sciences, studied pre-med in the United States before switching to public health, and his PhD research combines his biomedical training with interests in policy and behavioral health. It presents an intervention to prevent the spread of sickle c...

Asking questions—in the community and in the research lab

Tamar Klaiman, who earned her master of public health from the College of Public Health in 2006 and her PhD in 2009, has built a career asking questions. It’s part of what motivated her to run for (and win) a spot on the school board of Abington Township, a suburb outside of Philadelphia, in November. Klaiman has children in the Abington school system, and when the district accepted a $25 million private donation to renovate Abington Senior High School in 2018, without publicly disclosing the stipulations of the gift, she had found her call to action. The donation, from an A...
