Dr. Cloutier received her doctorate from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston with a major in nutrition science and minors in epidemiology and environmental health. She also is a registered dietitian, having received her MS in Nutrition Science from Boston University and a BS in Nutrition Science from the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. After working as a dietitian in various healthcare settings, Cloutier has taught in higher education since 2001. She has won awards for her teaching and is very passionate about helping students to develop into skilled public health professionals. Marissa is also committed to educating the public about nutrition. She has engaged local and state politicians to promote improved nutrition in schools and she has published a book on the Mediterranean diet that has been on the New York Time’s Bestseller List eight times. As part of her philosophy of teaching, Cloutier states that she seeks ways to “break down the classroom walls." She does this through experiential and service learning activities in her courses, and by involving students in political lobbying activities.
