At the Faculty Teaching, Research and Creative Awards ceremony on Monday, April 9, two College of Public Health faculty members will receive some of the university’s highest honors.
Mark Salzer, professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and director of the Temple University Collaborative on Community Inclusion, will receive the Paul W. Eberman Faculty Research Award, and Margaret M. Foley, associate professor in the Department of Health Services Administration and Policy, will receive the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award.
The Paul W. Eberman Faculty Research Award is given to one faculty member each year in recognition of an outstanding study or body of work. Salzer is the first faculty member from the College of Public Health to receive the award. Salzer has been principal or co-principal investigator on more than $25 million in federally funded research grants, published more than 100 articles and book chapters on the delivery of effective community mental health and rehabilitation services to individuals with psychiatric disabilities, and delivered more than 300 presentations on his work around the world. He has been interviewed on CNN, NPR, the Australian Broadcast Company and various other news outlets, and he has received honors including the Bell of Hope Award from Mental Health Partnerships and the inaugural Impact Award from the National Alliance of Mental Illness of Pennsylvania, Montgomery County.
“We are proud of Dr. Salzer’s accomplishments and indebted to his leadership that so well fit our college’s mission of preparing professionals and researchers to work to ensure all citizens in our global society lead productive lives,” said Laura A. Siminoff, dean of the College of Public Health and Laura H. Carnell Professor of Public Health.
Foley is one of six Temple faculty members receiving the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award this year, which recognizes those who “epitomize the highest levels of sustained teaching excellence in a classroom, laboratory, or clinical setting.” Foley has served on the faculty of the College of Public Health (and the former College of Health Professions) since 1998, teaching a total of 16 different courses, and she has developed courses such as Pharmacology and Medical Terminology in response to changing demands in the healthcare workplace.
In addition to teaching, Foley has more than 20 years experience in various aspects of health information management. In 2016, she received the College of Public Health Excellence in Teaching Award.
“Dr. Foley incorporates her deep expertise into all of her teaching,” wrote William Aaronson, chair of the Department of Health Services Administration and Policy. “She has embraced innovative, student-centered teaching methods in some of the most challenging classes.”
One former student wrote: “Dr. Foley is an excellent teacher. She pushes us to our limits because she knows we can do it, no matter how difficult it may seem. Her classes are always the toughest on the schedule. However, I know I will come away with the most knowledge from her classes.”
