Biography

Dr. Yaara Zisman-Ilani is an associate professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Temple University's College of Public Health. She holds an appointment in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Temple University's Lewis Katz School of Medicine and has an honorary appointment as an associate professor in the Department of Clinical, Educational and Health Psychology, Division of Psychology and Language Sciences, at University College London (UCL), UK. Dr. Zisman-Ilani is a member of the PCORI Advisory Panel on Clinical Effectiveness and Decision Science (CEDS) and the director of the Shared Decision Making Laboratory, which serves as a hub for interdisciplinary research, consulting, mentoring, and training in shared decision making.

Dr. Zisman-Ilani has published over 100 articles and book chapters, with her work appearing in journals such as JAMA Psychiatry, Lancet Psychiatry, JAMA Internal Medicine, and Psychiatric Services. She has extensive experience in developing shared decision making interventions, tools, and measures for individuals with mental health conditions and comorbidities across diverse settings, including psychiatric services, community mental health programs, primary care, inpatient care, and virtual care. Dr. Zisman-Ilani is a methodologist specializing in mixed methods, comparative and evaluation research, and systematic reviews.

Primary research interests include shared decision making, health communication, strategies to promote person-centered care, co-production and engagement methods, and mental health services, all with a focus on addressing health disparities and Social Determinants of Mental Health (SDoMH). Her research has been funded by NIH, PCORI, Rothschild Foundation, Wolf Foundation, and more.
