The Applied Epidemiology Minor provides students interested in science and health with an opportunity to enhance their skillset obtained from the undergraduate program in public health and other science-related undergraduate programs. This 18-credit minor will expand students' knowledge and abilities in the application of epidemiologic and statistical methods, tools, and frameworks focusing on evidence-based findings and best practices. The minor consists of six undergraduate courses (two required courses and four electives). View curriculum.
Students in the minor will understand how to investigate, detect, and address population- and community-level health issues. Through classroom and experiential learning, this program will train you to:
- Explore the application of epidemiological methods, including various study designs, to answer important questions about health and well-being
- Calculate measures of disease status and accurately interpret data
- Apply the steps of epidemiological disease investigation and learn the methods used to study epidemic outbreaks
- Apply appropriate analytic techniques to measure the extent of disease, the development of disease, and make comparisons between groups to understand disease and health-related outcomes
Elective courses allow you to customize the minor and focus on topics that interest you, such as major causes of morbidity and mortality, global health, environmental health, survey development for data collection, and statistical computing using standard analytic software used in research, business, and public health practice.
