Philadelphia/Southeast Division Monthly Updates October 20, 2014

Message from the Division Chair

Dr. Rufus Sylvester Lynch, ACSW

Dear Colleagues:

Our fall Division Steering Committee kick-off meeting held on Monday, September 22, 2014, at the Methodist Home for Children was a success; we had a total of thirty people who attended the meeting and remained for the continuing education workshop. Summary Notes from the Steering Committee Meeting can be found here.

Equally successful for those of you interested in influencing public policy was the Press Conference of the Philadelphia Strong Families Coalition (PSFC), which I Chair, held on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 in the Mayor’s Press Room. During the Press Conference PSFC released the report “Child Well-Being in Philadelphia: Profiles of Children, Families, & Fathers, as well as launched The Strong Families Commission Incorporated, with a mission to strengthen families and improve child well-being through advocacy for effective policies and programs, for leveraging resources, and for encouraging collaboration among Philadelphia’s organizations that are family focused and inclusive of Fathers.  A copy of the Press Releaseand the Report can be retrieved by pressing on this link.

I got to meet some of you personally at a continuing education event, held at the Philadelphia Juvenile Justice Services Center, on September 24th 2014, which by all accounts was also very successful. The event was a joint NASW-PA Philadelphia/Southeast Division workshop that addressed the challenges, strengthens, opportunities, and threats experienced by social and educational entities attempting to integrate Responsible Fatherhood within their system of care.  Agencies presenting at the workshop included: Children Services Incorporated, Congreso, John Marshall Elementary School, Mayor’s Reintegration Services/Fatherhood Enrichment Program, Presbyterian Children Village, Progressions Behavioral Health, Inc., and the Health Promotion Council’s program – Focus on Families, including Fathers.

Although, the Steering Committee meets face-to-face quarterly that does not mean that the leadership is not working weekly to organize the Division.  In fact, we are busily building the infrastructure to sustain the development of the Division. The following reports are indicative of the work getting done, and will serve as agenda items at the next meeting of the Steering Committee, scheduled for December 16th 2014.

The reports are:

  • Montgomery County CE Planning Meeting, dated Wednesday, August 27, 2014 – Submitted by Maria Weidinger, Coordinator of the Montgomery County Organizing Committee.

  • NASW-PA Philadelphia/Southeast Division, 2014 Division Membership Report, dated September 9th, 2014 – Submitted by Katherine A. Shecora, MSW, LSW.

See how much fun we are having, don’t worry, there are still Steering Committee positions that need to be filled as follows: Secretary, Budget and Finance Coordinator, Membership Coordinator, Social Work Month Coordinator, Continuing Education Coordinator, Nomination and Leadership Identification Coordinator, Social and Political Action Coordinator, Strategic Planning Officer, and Procedural Officer.

As Chair of the Division, I welcome a conversation about any of the above vacant positions.  I can be reached at drrslychnaswpase@iawfpa.com or at 215-879-1745.
