Public Health Photo of the Month is a recurring series that shifts the spotlight from words to visuals, showcasing standout work by CPH photographer Andrew Thayer. Each month, we feature an image that tells a story—capturing a moment, an idea, or an experience through his lens.
About the Photo: During September’s CPH Give Back Day, students, faculty, and staff volunteered at sites across Philadelphia to support local organizations. This image comes from the Salvation Army West Corps Community Center, where volunteers unloaded donations from Philabundance and restocked the food pantry. In the foreground, Ra'Shaun Gass, Community Engagement Manager, carries a box inside, while Lina-Maria Garcia, assistant professor of instruction in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, smiles toward the camera amid the busy scene.
Why We Love It: Photographer Andrew Thayer was drawn to the layered composition. “Dr. Garcia is framed by the action around her, which captures both the weight of the work and the shared energy of the day,” he said. The photo reflects the heart of Give Back Day: people coming together to strengthen their community.
