Temple University’s College of Public Health is leading a new NIH-funded study on how air pollution affects pediatric respiratory health across New York State. Led by Dr. Erin Kulick from the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, alongside co-PI Dr. Marina Feiler, the project will explore the link between air pollution and pediatric hospitalizations. The study will run from August 2024 to August 2026.
Dr. Kulick emphasizes the importance of this work, stating, “Children, especially those in underserved communities, are often more vulnerable to the harmful effects of air pollution. Our research aims to identify the specific environmental exposures contributing to increased hospitalizations and create a roadmap for public health interventions that will reduce these health disparities.”
The project is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). By examining data across New York State, the study aims to provide a deeper understanding of how residential pollution impacts respiratory health in children, a growing concern in many urban and suburban areas.
Dr. Kulick continues, “The findings from this study will not only highlight the need for cleaner air but will also inform future policies designed to protect the health of children, particularly in areas with high pollution levels. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that every child, regardless of where they live, has the opportunity to grow up in a healthier environment.”
Dean Jennifer Ibrahim of Temple’s College of Public Health shared her enthusiasm for the project, saying, “This research perfectly aligns with our College’s commitment to addressing health inequities and providing real-world solutions. By tackling an issue that disproportionately affects children in underserved areas, we are not only advancing public health research but also making strides toward more equitable health outcomes.”
This study builds on the College’s ongoing efforts to address environmental and social determinants of health. By combining rigorous research, community engagement, and practical solutions, Temple University is positioning itself at the forefront of initiatives aimed at reducing health disparities and improving public health nationwide.
