Students and faculty members in the College of Public Health joined researchers from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University and Thomas Jefferson University at the annual Community-Driven Research Day on Tuesday, Dec. 4.
Since 2010, the event has encouraged collaboration between researchers and local community organizations. This year's event, held at the University of Pennsylvania, focused on the theme of "Health Equity: Addressing the Social Determinants of Health."
The day included a poster session at which community-based organizations presented opportunities for research arising from their work. Meanwhile, academic faculty talked with representatives of those organizations, looking for projects that match their research interests. After a faculty member decides to partner with an organization, they can submit an application for a small grant to help fund the work. The basic tenets: both community and research partners are involved in all phases of research, and each selected project requires involvement by a student.
