Kinesiology alumnus makes big news with new research

Keith Diaz, a 2012 alumnus of the college’s doctoral program in Kinesiology, made big headlines this week for his research on the health effects of sitting for long periods of time. Diaz—now a research associate scientist at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons—was featured in articles in The New York Times, CNN, The Guardian and other news outlets for his research study which found that individuals who sit for long, uninterrupted periods of time are at greater risk of early death. According to Diaz and his research team, the risk is lower for those who are active or who frequently interrupt their sitting time with periods of movement.
