Global Impact

The College of Public Health is dedicated to building international partnerships and increasing engagement on health initiatives around the world. Our global health engagement programs promote research collaborations on global health issues, enhance collaborative trainings for health professionals, and provide students with opportunities to expand their understanding of global health through international health-related activities and exchanges.

The college offers experiential training programs for undergraduate, master's and doctoral students from across the globe. In addition, students in College of Public Health programs can participate in global public health practice and research opportunities with local communities through Temple's campuses in the United States, Italy and Japan.

Collaborative global training programs

Temple Dual Bachelor’s Master’s Degree program

Our master of public health and master of science in health informatics programs are part of the Temple Dual Bachelor's Master's Degree program, an accelerated dual-degree program that allows students to earn a bachelor's degree from their home universities and a master's degree from Temple University. Current DBMD international partners include universities in southern Europe, Africa and East Asia.

International student exchange programs

The college's international student exchange programs provide students with the opportunity to study at Temple University for experiences such as intensive training during summer semesters or as visiting scholars during the academic year.

Curriculum development

College of Public Health experts in global health work alongside faculty and administrators from other universities, with a particular emphasis on institutions in Africa and South America, to develop courses in public health and health informatics.

Public health training program at Temple Rome

Two courses will be offered at Temple's Rome campus in the Summer I term (May 18–June 30, 2023) for the minor in global health:

  • HIM 2031: Global Development of Health Information Systems
  • HPM 3131: Global Health Systems

Research collaborations

The college encourages and supports global health research through joint projects and scholarship exchanges, as well as the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Existing research projects with international partners include a Ukraine public health systems recovery and resilience initiative. In collaboration with project leader Pact, this five-year, $45 million effort aims to strengthen the government of Ukraine's capacity to respond to public health shocks, sustain critical public health services during a crisis, and expand mental health support to veterans and conflict-affected populations. Additional project partners include the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, Overseas Strategic Consulting, Ltd., Drexel University School of Public Health, Health Federation of Philadelphia, the Ukrainian Coalition for Vaccination, and the European Institute of Public Health Policy.

Study abroad opportunities

Temple students have a number of opportunities to participate in study abroad programs around the world, with global experiences in Central America, South America, the Mediterranean, East Asia and Africa. Learn more about studying abroad as a Temple student.

Global Impact Map

That map at the top of the page isn't just a design. Every cherry red dot you see signifies someone from the College of Public Health making an impact. Read more about some of these initiatives.

Bangladesh

Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
Infectious disease epidemiologist Kirsten Wiens is collaborating with scientists in Dhaka (Bangladesh) and Uvira (DRC) to better understand and reduce transmission of cholera. One aim of the work is to improve allocation of limited resources like vaccines and tests. “There’s a lot we can learn from the research about infectious disease burden on populations, and the work can have positive impact in these communities,” Wiens says.

Ukraine

In a program funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development, CPH is collaborating with agencies and universities in Ukraine, where war has had severe public health and mental health impact. CPH faculty have hosted Ukrainian health leaders to demonstrate U.S. healthcare infrastructure and traveled to Ukraine with the aim of helping develop trauma-informed academic training programs. “We'll be working with university partners to help them restructure curricula in public health and in mental-health-related disciplines of social work and nursing,” says William Aaronson, associate professor in health services administration and policy at the College of Public Health. “The current mental health system in Ukraine is not adequate to really address the challenges that will be occurring in the next years.”

Croatia

Ana Matić Škorić, a psycholinguistics researcher with a background in speech and language pathology from the University of Zagreb, joins the college’s Concepts & Cognition Laboratory during the fall 2024 semester as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar. She will share her expertise, working on research examining aging and cognitive decline in language. “We can do cross-linguistic studies that can be very interesting. I see this as a start of continuing collaboration,” she says.
