Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders in the Barnett College of Public Health at Temple University.  Our mission is to foster communication for health, equity, and social justice through our educational programs, research, and clinical programs.  Our department and the Temple University Speech Language and Hearing Clinic have served the Philadelphia community for over 70 years with groundbreaking assessments and treatments in the areas of voice, stuttering, aphasia, and bilingual language testing amongst others.

Our faculty are exemplary educators and researchers focusing on aphasia, neurocognitive disorders, aging and speech perception, childhood apraxia of speech, voice disorders, bilingualism, language disorders, literacy, and American Sign Language.  Faculty research balances foundational work on the nature of communication and communication disorders with the development of assessments and interventions that inform the practices of tomorrow. Expert clinicians supervise and teach in their area of expertise and guide students to connect what they have learned in the classroom to clinical practice or research.

The Temple University Speech Language and Hearing Center serves our local and regional communities with specialized speech and language services for speech language disorders across the lifespan including childhood apraxia of speech, stuttering, voice disorders, and aural rehabilitation. Spanish English bilingual services are offered by bilingual student clinicians. Screening services in the areas of speech, language, hearing, and voice are a vital source of community outreach.  The Philadelphia Aphasia Community at Temple supports people with aphasia through group activities. All clinical services are provided under the direct supervision of ASHA certified and PA licensed professionals and are a key part of the MA student experience.

Ranked in the top 10% of graduate programs in Speech Language Pathology nationally, we offer BA, MA, and combined BA+MA programs in Speech Language and Hearing Sciences as well as a PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders.  Our certificate programs in American Sign Language and in Linguistics are open to students across the university. The CSD student experience across levels and programs is characterized by individualized advising and mentoring, access to hands on clinical and research experiences that develop students professional skills, and coursework that combines foundational studies with applied activities in clinic, research labs, and in our simulation center. Our graduates also pursue careers related to research, sign language, applied behavioral analysis, and health care broadly. Our graduates are prepared for next steps and future growth in the professional path they choose.

We encourage you to visit and learn more about our programs and how we carry out our mission.  We are here for you!
