Public Health Photo of the Month is a recurring series that shifts the spotlight from words to visuals, showcasing standout work by CPH photographer Andrew Thayer. Each month, we feature an image that tells a story—capturing a moment, an idea, or an experience through his lens.
About the Photo: At this year's "Show and Tell" exhibit guided by professor Ryan W. McKee, PhD during Sex Ed Week, students had the chance to explore sexual and reproductive anatomy through virtual reality. Using Human Anatomy VR and a Meta Quest 3S headset, the CPH student in this image is fully immersed, navigating a detailed virtual model of the human body in a way that textbooks never could. With controllers in both hands, they engage with an interactive, dynamic representation of anatomy, making complex concepts feel more tangible.
Why We Love It: Photographer Andrew Thayer was drawn to the way light interacted with the scene. "The glow around the headset isn't from the VR itself—that's a flash I set up to backlight the student, creating a more dramatic effect," he said. "The Temple T on their sweatshirt is a subtle nod to the innovation that is happening right here on campus." The result? A photograph that seamlessly blends education, technology, and artistry.
