Maria Murt is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nursing. She earned a doctor of philosophy degree in nursing research at Widener University where she also completed her master’s degree in community health nursing with a focus on the nurse educator role.  For her dissertation research, Maria conducted a qualitative study to attain a better understanding of the experiences of nurse board members who currently hold governing board appointments in healthcare organizations, so as to describe the facilitators of and barriers to holding those appointments.  Despite the fact that nurses make up the majority of the healthcare workforce, with an intimate understanding of quality care and patient safety, fewer seats on governing boards in HCOs are filled by nurses than by physicians, surgeons (AHA, 2011) or non-clinicians.  Through her work, Maria hopes to address one of the four key recommendations of The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (IOM, 2011) report: that nurses become full partners, with physicians and other health professionals, in redesigning healthcare in the United States.
