The Recreational Therapy (RT) program offers undergraduate, accelerated and graduate programs designed to prepare students as entry-level and advanced recreational therapists. The program trains students to use goal-oriented recreation activities as a means of rehabilitation, health promotion, community participation, and life quality for children and adults of all ages who have illnesses and disabilities. Our program's vision is to becomes a world-class academic and research unit committed to advancing the role of play, recreation, and leisure opportunities in promoting active living, health, life quality and rehabilitation and disease prevention for diverse groups, especially those with chronic illnesses and disabilities across the lifespan.
The primary goal of the RT program is to prepare competent entry-level recreational therapists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills) and affective (behavior) learning domains.
The bachelor's and master's degree programs are designed to enable graduates to become eligible to take the national examination for Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS).

The curriculum is comprised of required and elective recreational therapy courses, health-related profession courses and support courses. Clinical experiences are integrated into the program to prepare students to practice recreation therapy in traditional and emerging service delivery settings.
Utilizing a range of activity-based interventions, such as aquatics, wheelchair sports, animal-assisted therapy, creative arts and horticulture, credentialed recreation therapists are in demand due to the expansion of long-term care, outpatient care and other services for people with disabilities.
Temple's RT program is highly regarded nationally for excellence in teaching and research. Faculty are established leaders in advancing RT as a health and human service discipline and have been recognized with numerous professional awards. As a result, RT students have a high success rate in both internship and employment opportunities.
The BS Program has accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs/Committee on Accreditation of Recreational Therapy Education.
