Bridging the Gap

The Kinesiology Department's Athletic Training Education Program hosted 5th graders from Lanning Square Elementary School in Camden, NJ, March 23.

The event was  part the "Bridging the Gap" project- sparked by Lindsay Reichard (Class of 2012), inspired by the Ben Franklin Bridge as the symbolic link between Lanning Square Elementary and Temple University.  The purpose is to let the Camden students experience what is available to them and give them encouragement to do well in school, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and to receive some mentoring in the process.

The ATEP students are paired with a 5th grader in the fall.  They students share letters and the ATEP students visit their elementary school counterparts in December for a holiday party.

Valentines are exchanged in February and the year culminates with the visit to from the 5th graders.  This year they participated in swimming activities, danced with a choreographer from "So You Think You Can Dance," showed their endurance in a cardio-fit circuit, and ended the day with a scavenger hunt around the Temple campus with Temple students in tow.
