Biography

Dr. Sgherza is the incoming Program Director of Exercise and Sport Science and Professor of Instruction, Department of Kinesiology, at Temple University.  Throughout his professional career, Anthony has donned numerous hats in sports performance. He spent his formative years as a physical therapist and athletic trainer at New York University (NYU) Sports Therapy Center. While at NYU, Anthony earned his PhD in Kinesiology, and when outside the clinic or off the field, he cultivated his fascination with sport as a multi-sport athlete, training and consulting with the university’s running, cycling, and triathlon teams.

Dr. Sgherza is former Professor and Program Director of Strength and Conditioning at Lyndon State College (LSC) and former athletic trainer and strength coach with the Vermont Mountaineers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL). Dr. Sgherza pioneered the beginning of performance development during LSC’s transition from NAIA to NCAA Division III athletics. He was independently responsible for the organization, supervision, and development of strength and conditioning programs for 13 varsity sports in addition to men’s club hockey (American Collegiate Hockey Association) and men’s and women’s club rugby (New England Rugby Football Union).

Dr. Sgherza chaired LSC’s accredited curriculum in exercise science and directed its educational recognition in strength and conditioning. Prior to LSC, Dr. Sgherza held a faculty appointment at Brooklyn College where he served as Program Director B.A. - M.D., a prestigious and provisional guaranteed entry to the medical school curriculum, housed in the Honors Academy of the college.

Dr. Sgherza recently completed strength and conditioning assignments with Penn State Football (2013) and UMass Football (2016). He holds certifications from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Association, and USA Weightlifting. His philosophy on student-athlete development can be summed up in three words – committed, coachable, and aware.
