Shawn Jackson received a BS in business administration at Widener University, a BSN at Neumann University, and her MSN and DNP at Temple University. After completing her BSN, she worked as a bedside nurse in a multitude of environments. She developed an affinity for adolescent parents and their children while working in the emergency department; this environment helped Jackson to identify the need to educate this population on parenting skills and the importance of education for these parents and their children.

After completing her MSN, Jackson became a nurse practitioner and worked as a primary care provider at the Mary Howard Health Center, a homeless clinic in Center City Philadelphia. This experience added to her desire to work with adolescent parents and their children, because the trend she identified in the emergency department was present here as well. This experience led her to complete her doctoral studies in nursing at Temple University, focusing on adolescent parents and their children.

Jackson's research is focused on parenting skills curriculums and their availability and utilization in Philadelphia and the surrounding counties. Nurse Family Partnership and the Mable Morris programs were two curriculums identified. Her capstone project was increasing referrals to Nurse Family Partnership and the Mable Morris home visiting parenting programs to help adolescent parents with parenting skills in a Federally Qualified Health Center in North Philadelphia.

Upon completing her DNP, Jackson joined the Nursing Department at the College of Public Health at Temple University to be part of a startup Nurse Managed Health Center at the Vaux Big Picture High School, where she will be a primary care provider, providing care for the adolescent students and community members. She will also be instrumental in developing programs to support teenage parents within the school and building pregnancy prevention programs.
