I have been a pediatric nurse for children (birth through late adolescence to young adulthood) for many years, including experience in the field of OB-Neonatal nursing (with a large, urban population of adolescent mothers) and also, their infants. I have provided pediatric nursing care to home care patients, bone marrow transplant and other oncology patients, many with chronic conditions such as Cystic Fibrosis and Sickle Cell Anemia, and countless other pediatric conditions of wellness and illness. I have provided direct nursing care, as well as having supervised several generations of student nurses in the clinical practice arena.
I believe that my most recent and meaningful contributions to nursing include having served by appointment of the American Nurses' Association (ANA), Board of Directors to the ANA Advisory Committee on Ethics and Human Rights. The initial appointment began in 2000, with re-appointment in 2004 for a second term. I served as the Chairperson for this body from 2004-2006. Among the many position statements for which I either co-authored or collaborated, I believe that my finest contribution was as a co-author for the American Nurses' Association (2010), Position Statement Registered Nurses' Roles and Responsibilities in Providing Expert Care and Counseling at the End of Life (See reference below). I provided the pediatric and adolescent perspectives for participation and decision making in end of life care for those with known terminal illnesses or injuries. This document is a national standard of care.

I have had extensive classroom and clinical teaching assignments (over the many semesters I have worked at Temple University; tenured,1989) as a faculty member, having taught student nurses at the graduate (MSN), RN-BSN (classroom and Online Learning OLL for the RN-BSN Program) and generic undergraduate level in the classroom, clinical and Laboratory arenas. My most recent clinical teaching has been in a Philadelphia community setting and also at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
However, I have also taught clinical pediatric nursing at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, Temple UChildren's Medical Center (1998- 2007) & Shriners' Hospital for Children at Philadelphia and OB/Neonatal Nursing at Temple University Hospital. In addition, I have served on approximately 20 doctoral dissertation committees for Temple University candidates over many years time in departments outside my home Department of Nursing.

Over time, my research interests have included this special one, "The Influence of Age and Experience on Children's Competence to Participate in Health Care Decisions." This is about adolescents' capacities, or lack thereof, to make informed health care decisions, including weighing all of the risks and benefits of willingness to go along with recommended treatment, or forego it, in collaboration with their families and licensed health care professionals.
I have done small, self-funded project entitled, "Confidentiality Concerns of School Nurses: Experienced Ethical Violations" (Summer, 2001-2003).The project was initiated in conjunction with a presentation to National School Nurses Association - American Healthcare Institute, School Nursing Regional Symposium, Philadelphia, PA. on 7/21/01. A publication on the American Nurses' Association website, a national level poster presentation and several speaking engagements emanated from this work.
