New Voice Screening Program

Beginning last fall, all incoming Master’s students in Communication Sciences and Disorders receive a voice screening by second year graduate clinicians participating in the Voice Disorders Treatment block.  Not only does this give our second year students the opportunity to do diagnostic work in voice, it helps identify possible problems with voice use and provides opportunities to counsel on prevention of voice problems.

Inside the 9th Annual Eleanor M. Saffran Cognitive Neuroscience Conference

The Temple University Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and the Eleanor M. Saffran Center for Cognitive Neuroscience hosted the 9th Annual Eleanor M. Saffran Cognitive Neuroscience Conference on Friday September 19th and Saturday September 20th 2014.  The theme of this year’s conference, working memory and working memory training, is highly relevant to research on language development and rehabilitation of developmental and acquired language impairments.

PhD Student Awarded ASHA Multicultural Grant

PhD Student Awarded ASHA Multicultural Grant

Doctoral candidate Lauren Cycyk was recently awarded a $10,000 grant from the Office of Multicultural Affairs of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association to fund her research on the home language experience and Spanish-English language development of toddler-aged children from families of Mexican descent.  ASHA's Office of Multicultural Affairs supports projects which infuse multiculturalism into educational and clinical practice.  Lauren Cycyk is advised by Dr. Carol Scheffner Hammer and in her fourth year of the doctoral program.

CSD Welcomes Ms. Meghan Rainone

Meghan Rainone joins the CSD department full-time with the goal to expand ASL offerings at Temple University.  She is a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology (1998) and Temple Law School (2001).  For more than 13 years, she has served as an adjunct faculty at such higher institutes as University of Pennsylvania, St.

Research in the Aphasia Rehabilitation Research Laboratory Featured at the Clinical Aphasiology Conference, St. Simon Island Georgia, May 27-June 1, 2014

Three papers from the Aphasia Rehabilitation Research Laboratory were presented at the Clinical Aphasiology Conference (CAC) in May.  One paper “Using Virtual Clinicians to Promote Functional Communication Skills in Aphasia” was the outcome of a two-year interdisciplinary collaboration, including authors from Communication Sciences and Disorders (Michelene Kalinyak-Fliszar and Nadine Martin), Physical Therapy ( Emily Keshner), Computer sciences (Justin Shi and student Gregory Teodoro) and Carnegie Mellon University’s Computer Science Department (Alex Rudnicky). &

R13 Grant from the National Institute of Deafness and other Communication Disorders (NIH/NIDCD) will Support Conference for Three Years.

The Eleanor M. Saffran Conference on Cognitive Neuroscience and Rehabilitation of Communication Disorders has just received support from NIDCD with a three-year R13 conference grant for $113,013 (2014-2017; PI:  Nadine Martin)Now in its ninth year, the conference was initiated by Nadine Martin in honor of her mentor, the late Eleanor M.

Faculty in Communicataion Sciences and Disorders awarded Honorary Doctorate from Åbo Akademi University in Turku (Åbo) Finland.

Nadine Martin, Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders and Director of the Aphasia Rehabilitation Research Laboratory, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Psychology from Åbo Akademi University in Turku (Åbo) Finland on May 23, 2014.  This doctorate was in honor of her 20 year collaboration with Professor Matti Laine, Chair of the Department of Psyhcology and Logopedics at  Åbo Akademi University.   Dr. Martin also was invited to speak as the International Greeter at the Conferral Banquet held in Turku Castle.   Drs.
