Athletic Training Program receives two grants to study sport concussion.
The Athletic Training Program at CPH has partnered with Temple’s School of Pharmacy to study genetics and sports concussions.
Ryan Tierney, PhD, ATC and Jane McDevitt, ATC, CSCS of the AT Program and Evgeny Krynetskiy, PhD, DSc of the School of Pharmacy recently earned a $4,472 grant from the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association for their work Study assessing N-Methy-D-aspartic acid Receptor Subunit NR2A Polymorphism and Sport Concussion.
Drs. Tierney and Krynetskiy were also awarded the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers Society, Inc. Grant for $3,800 for their work Study assessing Glutamate Receptor, Ionotropic N-methyl D-aspartate 2B Polymorphism and Concussion Severity.
Rehabilitation Sciences TR professor receives Innovation in Teaching grant
Rhonda Nelson, PhD, CTRS, a Department of Rehabilitation SciencesTherapeutic Recreation professor at CPH, was awarded a $5,000 Innovation in Teaching Award through the College of Public Health for the 2012-2013 academic year. Her project, Using Technology to Enhance Student Success with Credentialing Exams, will focus on developing web-based instructional tools to assist Temple University students preparing for their NCTRC Exam.
Rehabilitation Sciences TR student receives CARAS grant
Anna Poorman, a recent graduate of the Therapeutic Recreation program in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, received a Creative Arts, Research and Scholarship (CARAS) Award for Summer 2012 for her project Effects of a Cognitive Stimulation Program on Cognition and Locus of Control in Assisted Living Residents. The $3,048 grant allowed Anna to conduct research at Sunrise Assisted Living in Haverford under the mentorship of Dr. Rhonda Nelson, a professor of TR at the College.
Kinesiology faculty funded to host sports day in February
Margo Greicar, EdD, ATCand Jamie Mansell, PhD, ATC, Assistant Professors of Kinesiology at CPH, received a grant to fund their idea for Temple University Girls and Women in Sports Day. This event, which will take place in February 2013, will bring local middle school girls to Temple to learn about sports.
